Coordinating and performing scientific activities on research vessels or research flights is often demanding work requiring exceptional time commitments. In order to recognize the extensive additional hours worked by staff on research flights and cruises, This JISAO Research Cruise and Research Flight policy provides a framework for additional compensation or time off for extra hours worked for employees working in the field on a research vessel or research flight:
As specified in the Professional Staff Program for overtime-eligible employees, a work week consists of 40 hours worked in 7 calendar days with all hours worked over 40 paid at time and one half (overtime). At the employee’s request and with the supervisor’s approval, overtime-eligible positions may receive compensatory time at time and one half, in lieu of overtime compensation. Compensatory time must be used or paid by December 31 of each year.
If the employee on a cruise/flight works on a holiday, the employee will receive pay for hours worked plus 8 hours of holiday credit, in the form of an alternative day off. The credit should be used within 90 days.
As specified in the Professional Staff Program, full-time schedules for exempt staff are assumed to be at least 40 hours in a 5-day work week. While on a research cruise or flight, JISAO exempt staff will earn a flat rate of 10 hours of straight-time per day, 7 days per week. Employees can earn up to 12 hours/day maximum if required to work additional hours above 10. At the supervisor’s discretion, straight time earned while on flight/cruise may be paid out or used as comp-time or some combination of the two. Straight time is defined as the employee’s annual salary divided by 2080 hours. Compensatory time must be used or paid by December 31 of each year.

The JISAO Research Cruise and Flight Policy is effective from the moment an employee begins travel to the research cruise ship or research airplane from either a UW work location, airport or train station, and ends when an employee returns from a cruise or flight to the airport or train station from which they departed. An employee may claim overtime/comp time pay in accordance with the policies specified above while in transit to a cruise. If travel to and from the cruise/flight location and the cruise/flight occurs on the same day and total time including work hours and travel hours is greater than 12 hours, Level 1 employees should check with the Administrator to determine if any additional hours can be claimed as hours worked.
